Preparing Your Vehicle for Daily Road Trips Back to School

Daily road trips back to school

Textbooks, check. Stationary, check. Uniform, check. New shoes, check. Your car?

With summer break nearing its end and back-to-school season upon us, parents (and students) all around the country are busy preparing for the new school year with extensive checklists. But what many often end up overlooking is the vehicle they would use for school runs. Is your car ready for it?

Getting the Car Ready for Back to School – A Safety Checklist

Considering that you must have a lot of other things on your plate, we have prepared a checklist of things you cannot overlook at any cost to help you get the car ready for the new school year.

Find Out If Your Car Needs an Oil Change

Oil is essential for running your engine smoothly. Without oil, the moving parts of the engine will grind against each other and cause damage. So check your oil level regularly and add oil as needed. The recommended mileage for an oil change is 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on the make and model of your car, your driving habits, and the type of oil used.

Check your owner’s manual to see if you are due for an oil change.

Check the Brakes

Having properly functioning brakes on your vehicle is undeniably crucial, and we probably don't need to remind you of that. You can’t risk driving a car with faulty brakes, even if it’s just a block. Therefore, these should always be on the top of your vehicle maintenance list, more so when preparing for going back to school because of the potential beating they may have taken over the summer break with the increased activity. Check the brake pads, rotors, drums, calipers, hoses, and brake fluid. If you can’t do it on your own, have a reliable auto technician do it for you.

Make Sure the Cooling System is in Good Working Condition

You may have already checked the AC (it’s easier to remember), but the engine cooling system is often overlooked. But as much as you need the air conditioner to stay cool, your engine needs a properly working cooling system not to get overheated from all the work it does. Check the radiator, coolant, fans, and thermostat, and make sure they are all in good working condition.
